A cold day in February of last year.  This photo was taken during an early morning hike at Bowmont Park in Calgary Alberta.

Well I have decided that my soapbox is ready.  This is going to be the home of my blog for the timebeing as I look to find a more permanent host and domain in this blogosphere.

A bit about me and what’s up right now…

Currently I am working on my MCSE and once that is complete I will likely be beginning to study for my CCDA.  So with that in mind, you can probably tell I tend to stray into the more technical design realm of the IT world.  My interests are in systems design and process refinement.

In my life outside of work I am still a geek though I enjoy spending time with my family (my very patient and loving wife, Robyn and my awesome kids Jessica and Iain).  I enjoy photography, cooking, computers, occasional writing and reading when the mood strikes.

Well I think that covers it in a nutshell.  You will find in here a wide range of things for the occasional Tip of the Week for your PC, to a new recipe I have just tried to an alternative cleaner for the home.  To sum it up you will find a version of me here… slightly scattered and random

I recently came across the Jing Project.  It is being setup by Techsmith (the folks that bring you Camtasia Suite for screen capping and creating wicked training vids).

The tool is cross platform (Windows and Mac – doesn’t look like linux is in the works) and allows you to create video and annotated screen captures and either save them (swf for video and png for pictures) locally for manual embedding in websites, attachments to emails, etc… or you can share them via a short URL to screencast.com (a user ID is required to store items).

Screencasting can be a very efficient method of creating training videos and How-To’s. 

There are a number of products and projects out there currently that also allow you to capture your screen to video that are a little less easy to use though are nearly as equally functional.  I recently tried the “Ultra Screen Recorder” which is branched off of the UltraVNC GPL project.  UVNC is at it’s core a remote access tool (hence the VNC).  The project has built an accelerated video mirror driver which allows you to run a VNC console using less memory.  The other perk to this is that in using the mirror driver to aid in capture creates the same net effect.  High quality, full fram video without a tax on your CPU during capture.

Such a fine specimen of technical writing is below.  lol, yeah right.  If I were staying in a hotel and I read that I think I would have ended up locking up my laptop and crying myself to sleep.  Even a technically literate person would find themselves in a bit of confusion
